Gregory E. O’Brien is a partner practicing in Cavitch’s litigation group. He has extensive first and second chair trial experience in the defense of complex negligence, insurance, and business disputes in both state and federal court. He is also an accomplished appellate practitioner who has briefed and argued cases to the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Ohio Supreme Court, and numerous intermediate Ohio appellate courts. Greg also advises clients on real estate and other business matters.

Greg has been an active member in numerous professional organizations, including: the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, Appellate Courts Committee (Chair, 2003 - 2005); the Ohio Bar Association, Appellate Law Specialty Board (Chair 2006 - present); the Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorneys, President (2008); Cleveland Association of Civil Trial Attorneys; and the Defense Research Institute, Insurance Coverage Committee (2008, 2009), and CGL Subcommittee (2009).

Greg has been awarded numerous honors throughout his career, including being named as a Delegate to the Judicial Conference, Eighth District Court of Appeals in 2007 and 2009. He also has had an A/V Rating from Martindale Hubbell since 2002. Greg was named an Ohio Super Lawyer in 2004, 2005, 2008, and 2009 (Appellate Law) and was awarded the Ohio Association of Civic Trial Attorney’s Distinguished Service Award in 1999, 2001, 2005, and 2006, as well as the OACTA President’s Award in 2008. He received a DRI Exceptional Performance Citation for 2007 - 2008.

Greg is very involved in the community through organizations such as the St. Ignatius High School Father’s Club (President, 2009 - 2010), the Rocky River Youth Hockey (Board of Trustees 2005 - present and Advisory Council 2002 - 2004), and several youth baseball organizations in Rocky River, Ohio where he is involved in coaching. He is also a frequent volunteer for projects associated with the Business Volunteerism Council, the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, and Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.

In 1986, Greg received his law degree from The Ohio State University College of Law and in 1983 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration (cum laude) from Walsh College. Greg also successfully completed the course of study at the International Association of Defense Counsel’s Trial Academy in 1995.
