Michael C. Cohan concentrates his practice on planning and problem solving for businesses, primarily in the areas of business-related litigation, all aspects of employment law, and title insurance issues.

Business litigation has included a variety of matters frequently ranging among contract and shareholder disputes, trade secrets and non-competition issues, real estate and construction matters, the defense of class action cases and other types of complex litigation, and tax controversies.

In the area of employment law, Mike not only litigates the employment cases, but also he is heavily involved in advising business clients on compliance with employment laws, so as to minimize and avoid problems.

For many years he has also represented title insurance companies in handling both claims under policies and direct litigation against the underwriters, including defending major class action cases.

Early in his career, Mike successfully litigated a trade secrets case on behalf of an employer. The opinion in that case, entitled
Pyromatics v. Petruziello, became one of the most frequently cited cases in Ohio in the area of trade secrets. Later, another of his cases, entitled Northfield Park Associates v. Northeast Ohio Harness, became the leading case in Ohio relied on by commercial landlords who seek to recover possession of their property from a tenant.

Along with other members of the firm, Mike has participated in legal writing, as an author and editor of the
Ohio Transaction Guide and Current Legal Forms. He has also lectured to various groups on topics such as trade secrets, non-competition agreements, injunctions, piercing the corporate veil, commercial evictions, title insurance, a variety of employment issues, and wage and hour issues.

Mike is an active member of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association, and the American Bar Association, as well as the Ohio Land Title Association.

Mike has made the transition from a litigation attorney to a trusted advisor to many businesses and their owners. As a result, he is very involved, either directly or in close conjunction with other specialists in the firm, in counseling business owners on a variety of matters.

Mike served as Chairman of the firm’s Litigation Department for a number of years, and he has served on the Management Committee for approximately ten years. Beginning in 2006 he has been the Managing Partner for the firm.

Mike and his wife Sarah were married in 1979 and currently reside in Lakewood, Ohio. They have enjoyed raising their four children, all of whom have been involved in competitive swimming and a variety of other sports and extracurricular activities. They are particularly proud of the educational accomplishments of their children, who either have attended or are currently attending Cornell University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Pennsylvania, the United States Military Academy at West Point, and Boston University.

Over the years Mike has particularly enjoyed his approximately ten years as a youth hockey coach, approximately eleven years as Director of a high school foreign exchange student program, his completion of two marathons, and his involvement as a swim team parent. As the children get older he hopes to have more free time for golf, tennis and fitness.

Mike was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 7, 1952. In 1974 he graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree (magna cum laude) from Boston College. In 1977 he received his Juris Doctor degree from Loyola University in New Orleans, where he served as an editor of the Loyola Law Review.

He was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1977. Since then he has been admitted to various federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court and the United States Tax Court.

Mike joined Cavitch in 1977 and has spent his entire career here.
