Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia: SCOTUS Rules in Favor of Gay and Transgender Rights

On Behalf of | Jun 15, 2020 | Employment Law

On June 15, 2020, the Supreme Court decided a landmark case extending the workplace protections offered under Title VII to gay and transgender individuals. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits workplace discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, and national origin. In a 6-3 decision, the Court held that this broad language prohibits an employer from firing an individual simply for being gay or transgender because sex plays a necessary and undisguisable role in the decision. Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote the majority opinion. The full Supreme Court opinion can be found here.
